West Side Park (1907-1908)
World Series Championships
1907-1908 West Side Park World Series Championships: This awesome panoramic view from center field of West Side Park is taken from a 1908 poster in tribute to the back-to-back World Series Championships won by the Chicago Cubs. Newspaper accounts at the time reported that the North Siders were so dominant that their fans said they were becoming bored. Little did they know it would take 108 years to win their next championship.
This second iteration of the wooden structure was in operation from 1893 to 1915, on a block bounded by Taylor, Wood, Polk and what is now Wolcott streets. With a capacity of 12,500, this was a much more spacious venue then the first rendition (1885 to 1891), which also included a trendy-at-the-time bicycle track. Outfield dimensions were 340-560-340-feet, which was a dramatic improvement over the 216-foot lines at the old structure (215 feet was the minimum allowed).
West Side Park was the home to the most successful Chicago Cubs teams of the 20th century. The team won pennants in 1906, 1907, 1908 and 1910, a run which included the consecutive World Series wins in 1907 and 1908. After new ownership moved the team to the North Side's Weeghman Park (later renamed Wrigley Field) in 1916, West Side Park was torn down in 1920. The site is now occupied by the University of Illinois Medical Center.
